Type Locality and Naming

Songliao Basin east. Named by Li Yongxiao in 1962. The reference section is located in well No. 103 in the Shulan town neighborhood of the Shulan coalfield, Jilin.

Synonym: Jishu Fm


Lithology and Thickness

Grayish white or grayish green sandstone and siltstone and brown sandy mudstone, siltstone and mudstone. The lower part is intercalated with several industrial coal beds, and a non-persistent basaltic tuffaceous conglomerate bed is sandwiched between the upper and lower beds. The formation varies greatly in thickness, being 620 m thick in general, 380–710 m thick in the Bangchuigou area and 400 m thick in the Erdaoche area.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It conformably or disconformably overlies the late Paleocene–early Eocene Bangchuigou Fm.

Upper contact

Unconformably underlies the Oligocene Shuiquliu Fm.

Fossils

The formation contains the plants Sequoia and Alnus and sporopollen. Based on the contained plants and sporopollen it is inferred that its age is Eocene.
